Action Plan

The Port Hope Project involves the construction of a long-term waste management facility (LTWMF); the remediation of the sites contaminated with historic wastes; the transfer by truck of the contaminated material to the new facility along specified transportation routes; the closure of the facility; and the maintenance and monitoring of the facility for several hundred years.

Additional Information

The Port Hope Area waste is classified as Historic Waste, meaning that it is low-level radioactive waste for which the owner cannot reasonably be held responsible and for which the federal government has accepted responsibility for long-term management. The waste, in its current situation, does not create an urgent health risk, but is not sustainable from a regulatory or social perspective.
